Episode 2: How to generate resources that tackle social, economic, and political inequalities with Dr. Abhishek Bhati

This week on the Nonprofit Science Podcast:

[0:55] Today we are joined by Dr. Abhishek Bhati. He’s an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Bowling Green State University and he is just a wealth of knowledge when it comes to understanding how nonprofits generate resources and how they use those resources to tackle social, economic, and political inequalities.

[2:22] Can you talk about what post colonial theory is and how it has shaped the lens through which we see the communities we serve and how we design nonprofit programs?

[9:36] Do you think these stereotypical representations hurt nonprofits in the long term?

[23:28] Is there a correlation between the growth of community giving days and the use of even subtle poverty porn?

[35:30] Have you found that nonprofits benefit from choosing one community giving day and putting all their eggs in that one basket, or do they benefit from taking advantage of all the community giving days available to them?

[37:40] In theory there are two ways we can raise more money- we can implement practices that will increase the money we raise, or we can terminate practices that are decreasing giving. Can you expand on that? And, if you have any practical tips for nonprofits I’d love to hear them.

[42:59] When we think about post colonial theory and social equity, how does this relate to some of the problems we’ve been facing in the sector particularly when it comes to things like board diversity and equity and inclusive communities? How can we take lessons from research and theory and use it to actually make strides on diversity initiatives?

[54:52] How do you come up with questions to research?
