Episode 46: Insight into Black led nonprofit organizations with Dr. Gregory Wilson

This week on The Nonprofit Science Podcast I am joined by Dr. Gregory Wilson.

Dr. Wilson is a Provost’s Fellow and an Assistant Professor of Management and Public Affairs and Sociology at The Ohio State University. He is also a faculty affiliate at the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity and the Center for Community and Nonprofit Studies at University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research examines how and why the nonprofit sector, itself, is racialized and how this system impacts the work of nonprofits led by people of color, particularly those led by African Americans.

During this conversation, we discuss:

⦿ [9:45] Why it is useful to talk about issues of race at the intersectional level and as its own topic

⦿ [13:30] A working definition for a Black led organization as one in which the executive and a majority of full-time employees identify as African American

⦿ [16:00] What does it mean to say the nonprofit sector is racialized

⦿ [24:30] Why the issues of racialization go beyond funding of black led organizations to include volunteering, demonstrating impact, and more

⦿ [28:00] What is data trauma and how does it affect Black led organizations

⦿ [33:00] Why the sector’s bend towards sensationalized stories hurts Black led organizations and can undermine the resiliency of the people these nonprofits serve

⦿ [36:00] What is a poverty pimp

⦿ [43:00] How the current political climate is impacting the sector, specifically higher education

⦿ [49:00] What is the racialized nonprofit industrial complex

Put it into Practice

⦿ How does your nonprofit interact with Black led organizations?

⦿ How have you experienced the racialized nonprofit sector?

⦿ Does your nonprofit’s storytelling uplift or undermine those you serve?
